I’ve been patiently waiting for days like this because I’ve been clearly designated a hog by a few service providers. Those you are avid tech enthusiasts or evangelists are usually the first to notice. I’ve been either warned or cut by youtube, facebook, twitter, verizon and a few others.
When you have complete control over wireless service to products like iPhone and now iPad this is an easy thing to do in my opinion. Customers have to get rid of both if they don’t want to be affected by such whims. Which is why I’ve always steered clear of such situations no matter how much others try to sell me on it. To all my friends that didn’t understand what I meant by open versus closed networks this is only one example of it. Since I was never dating the iPhone this doesn’t mean much to me but to those who will find themselves having to choose, buy wisely and good luck.
We should all be prepared because this is not over. One of the reasons this choice has been made is because the option of tethering is moving in on the market place. Why pay for service at your home, cell and then a seperate one for the laptop. Tethering has been around for some time but if you could tether your cellphone to your laptop you wouldn’t need to pay for the other services. Think about it, three sources of income from one person: home, cell & laptop.
With the net neutrality and other broadband debates we are no where near the end of where this will lead. Customers will have to decide if it’s enough for them to take action like the Time Warner cap fight. What would you do?
